05.07.08: salmon hatchery, aquarium, totem poles

Last Saturday John escorted Stefanie and me to a salmon hatchery nearby. Unfortunately it drizzled a little bit, but the hike through the forest to the hatchery was lovely and we were taught in dendrology and the small exhibition of the hatchery was really informative.

It was raining in the afternoon and we took the bus to the Stanley Park to visit there the Vancouver Aquarium. On 10th of June a Beluga gave birth to her first calf, which we could see in his basin. The baby was born with 50 kilograms and 1.35 meters long and made history because she’s the first calf in Canada to be born to an aquarium-born beluga!
The fascinating exhibition “Frogs forever” showed us how to save them because one-third to one-half of the world’s 6,000 known amphibian species could vanish in our lifetime, resulting in the single largest mass extinction since the disappearance of the dinosaurs.
Stanley Park is a 404.9 hectare urban park bordering downtown Vancouver. It is the largest city-owned park in Canada and the third largest in North America. The park attracts an estimated eight million visitors every year, including locals and tourists, who come for its recreational facilities and its natural attributes. One of the attractions are the Totem Poles which we visited in the afternoon.
